And its integration into YOU, your nervous system, beliefs, muscles and habits.
The aha is sudden and profound as we connect more deeply into our feelings, histories, revelations and clues about our tapestry. The second step in processing our aha is being still and allowing the new connections or puzzle pieces come together. These integrations form transformations in us that may take weeks, months or even decades to process and implement. The permanent changes shift your mindset, habits identity and new beliefs you accept and take ownership of.
With an “Aha!“ insight, a sudden flash of clarity, rapidly reorganizes what we think we know about the self. New knowledge occurs, accompanied by a rush of positive emotions and new insights into old questions and confusions. There is a burst of high-frequency gamma waves sparked in the brain’s right temporal lobe (just above the right ear), this signals your sudden connection between previously unrelated concepts you held. A mental shift happens, the brain instantaneously switches from a problem you can’t solve (without the missing piece or clarity) to the solution and fill in the blank information you didn’t previously have.
This insight triggers a release of dopamine and activates the hippocampus and amygdala. This emotional “spark” acts like glue or a magnet, searing the new piece of information into and connection with your long-term memory questions.
The insight, “felt” in the body and mind often manifests as increased skin conductance (electrodermal activity) and momentary accelerated heart rate, indicating a “somatic marker” or bodily signal of truth and correctness. “Aha!” activates the brain’s reward system, dopamine release in the same area that responds to food or addictive substances providing a surge of joy or relief.
Insight can also act as a “connective” experience, where the brain’s resting default mode network aligns with executive networks, allowing the body to settle and feel more aligned, calm and integrated. “Aha!” moments often comes after a mental impasse and awareness breaks through. Once the brain understands the new neural pattern, the nervous system’s ability to sync up with new muscle patterns is enhanced and rewired also.
“Aha!” moments establish a new neural pathway that the brain needs to consciously think about and the muscle system develops new movements. Repeated action converts this eventually into automatic, neuromuscular pathways. Visualizing the movement while feeling it, has been shown to increase EMG (electromyographic) activity in muscles, essentially preparing them to perform new movements more efficiently. Resting and relaxing the mind allows the brain to reorganize and strengthens these connections. Taking naps can facilitate and speed up this process.
Acknowledge the satisfaction of the insight, as this emotional engagement helps make your learning and wisdom a lasting evolution. True transformation involves updating your self-concept and engaging with your consciousness differently.
